Craps owes its origin long time back. In fact, we need to travel thousands of years back to get familiar with the beginning of this wonderful game. It is an accepted fact that this ancient game of fun and enjoyment was brought to United States from European countries. Following theories have been accepted in this regard to explore the roots of craps:
- During the era of Holy Roman Empire, the soldiers used to play a similar game, with cubes made from shaved knuckles of animals like pig. These soldiers used to employ their inverted shields to toss these cubes and burn their leisure.
- The warriors of Third Crusade are also considered to play a game called hazard, which finally transformed into craps by Americans.
- Arab soldiers are considered to develop a game called azzahr, which used to employ small cubes with numbers inscribed on them. The people in Mediterranean region improved the version to adopt a game called hazard. Finally, it was the English people, who renamed it as hazard. Again, the French players imitated the game and called it crabes. The virus continued to spread to Acadia, a French colony, where people called it crebs or creps. Lastly, the game was brought to America, where it got its final name as craps.
- John H. Winn is considered as the reformer of this game, who designed a new face for the game and provided shelter to bets like Don’t Pass.
- With legalization of land casinos in 1931, the craps table came into existence. Since then, many modifications have been brought into the way this traditional game is played.
